ALBATROSS
|
Shaun Weng arrived in Cape Town on his 38" Ted Hood Design yacht "Albatross" in early 2001, 3 years into his dream of being the first Chinese to solo circumnavigate.
Shaun may be a solo sailor, but he is anything but a loner! He quickly made friends at RCYC, and then went on an overland trip exploring S.A. and Zimbabwe as far as the Victoria Falls. Shaun was born in Beijing, China and went to study in the U.S.A. in 1980, later becoming a Computer software developer and a naturalised U.S. citizen. Prior to setting off on his solo circumnavigation in late 1998, Shaun had 4 years cruising experience off the Californian Coast. He says he has learnt a whole lot since then! He took a year sailing and exploring the Mexican coast, the Galapagos, French Polynesia, Tonga, and New Zealand, by which time he'd gained enough confidence to tackle Cape Horn.

The following year was spent exploring South America, Tierra del Fuego between Chile and Argentina, Brazil all the way up to Salvador, then back down again to Uruguay and Argentina. Albatross left Buenos Aires just before New Year for Cape Town, via Tristan. Shaun was in no great hurry to leave Cape Town, taking time to explore South Africa a little, (pictures) in between overhauling Albatross. He plans to cruise up the East coast to Durban, cross to Madagascar and visit the surrounding islands before continuing on to Australia and New Zealand to complete his circumnavigation.
