SOUTH AFRICAN SAILING

Information Leaflet 3/ 2005

SAS assistance to Sailing Vessels going foreign

SAS has made arrangements with SAMSA to undertake the processing and boat inspections of sailing pleasure vessels requiring registration on the SA Ships Register. This will save yachtsmen wishing to cruise abroad a considerable amount of time and money as SAS will in future provide a one-stop shop for this service.

Any South African vessels that are entitled to be registered and making a voyage to a place outside the Republic must be registered on the SA Ships Register - see section 44 of the Ship Registration Act 1998.

Your attention is drawn to an explanation of the requirements under Services, Going Foreign on the SAS website and also to Marine Notice 11 of 2005 that is also available on the SAS website.

Of importance is that specially appointed SAS Surveyors will be able to undertake the vessel inspections for the issue of Local General Safety Certificates and not a Certificate of Fitness as a prerequisite to Registration. There will be SAS inspectors at each of the major ports (excepting Richards Bay to be dealt with later) plus Knysna. The names of the surveyors are as follows:

SaldanhaCapt Michael Meyer
Cape TownMr Henton Jaaback
Mr Robert Heimann
Mr Charles Reynolds
Mr Gordon Webb
KnysnaMr Roger Clancy
Port ElizabethMr Gordon Webber
DurbanMr David Cox
Mr Errol Rutherford
Mr Harry Poulter
Mr Brian Ward

The Surveyor's charges for inspection will be in line with existing fees and SAS will charge R300 for the service. There is also a payment to the Registrar of Ships which is a statutory fee payable to SAMSA. The Registration is valid for 5 years from the date of issue and is renewable.

This service will be available from 21 February 2005.
