FROM THE COMMODOREThe euphoria of the Salvador Race has now culminated with the flighting of the one hour documentary on Supersport which, I believe, is a good reflection of the race. One cannot receive bigger compliments than those of the Sponsor, represented by Franco, who want to come back again. World Sport, the marketing agents for Heineken, the Governor of Bahia who has invited us back there and was overjoyed at the opportunities that this race gives to both countries and then last but not least the competitors from Leopard through to Summer Love at the other end of the spectrum. They all complimented RCYC for a really enjoyable and well organised event. From our side we really thank all the owners who put their very expensive yachts into the race and the crews who gave up their time, many using well earned leave, to participate in the event. Without you there cannot be a race. For the record Leopard won line honours and set a new all time record for the race, Rambler won the South Atlantic Trophy, the main prize, on handicap followed by Leopard then the first SA entry High Fidelity. In fourth place Voortrekker, sailed by a development crew, some going for a 40 year old boat with relatively inexperienced young sailors. Well done to the Cruisers - in the Monohull class - Avanti first, with Zephyr second and Summer Love in third place. In the Multihull class, Alleycat first with Exta-sea second and Island Fling in third place. Mention must be made of the Seamanship Award which went to another RCYC youth team on Overproof, an unfortunate choice of name as it came to be, skippered by Gerrie Heggie Jnr, for bringing their boat home with, at one stage, no rudders at all. There were two unfortunate retirees Vineta, who lost her mast and Ponty Leisure/Gumption which had a severely damaged mast. Both boats made it to Walvis Bay under their own power. Congratulations to all. Back on the home front, the sailing committee continue with their programme to ensure racing is kept at the forefront with not only the big events like the upcoming Mykonos Race, the Table Bay Regatta which has now been renamed the WP Keel Boat Regatta, but also the weekend racing which is where it really all starts for newcomers to the sport as well as those seasoned sailors honing their skills. With the world wide economic situation as it is, the forthcoming regattas this year may well be less funded than before. Everyone will have to bear with this, and the chairman of the various events will have to budget accordingly, with the focus on the quality of the completion and not how many" freebies" can be driven out of the budget. I am pleased to report that notwithstanding one of our sub-sponsors not coming to the party, there was no overrun on the Salvador race, where we had 48 entries from ten different nations. The Elliot Basin move is going well, albeit the restructuring of the SCB is about a month behind schedule due to weather problems and other factors. We have however fulfilled our promise to give everyone from the ELB a chance to have a "new home". To date we have had approx a 80% buy-in from those mooring owners. Unfortunately the project is about R600 000 over budget, but allowances have been made for this eventuality. For the future, in terms of revenue stream, we have been asked to host the Clipper Challenge in September 2009, and further into 2010 the Portimao Race as well as the Five Oceans Challenge, both of which involve Sir Robin Knox Johnston, as a Director of the company running them. Unfortunately, I believe that with the costs our club is facing, we definitely have to look to the City for a greater slice of the financial pie to host these top international events and for them to recognise RCYC contribution to promoting the City, SA and the Sport. In the past we have given free moorings, office space, function rooms etc etc. These Races are all commercial operations and therefore should pay in the future. There have also been good meetings with Robertson and Caine in recent weeks and we can expect our launching facility to be used by them and other boatbuilders in the near future. There is a proposal to employ a part time person on a retainer plus commission to recruit members. Hopefully this will help on the membership drive. Should there be any objections to this, by the members, please inform me before 14 March. In closing, I have just read Capt Derek Cook's book titled " Hand Book for Skippers" it really is good value and for those new-comers or those of us that are getting older and tend to forget the finer detail, this is a must to have onboard. The book can be ordered from Reception. Yours Aye |

Mykonos Off shore Regatta: Entries have now hit 70; unfortunately only 40 can be accommodated in the Harbour. Options are anchoring outside Mykonos or up at Langebaan Yacht Club, or Saldanha Bay Yacht Club and rafting up will be allowed at the SAN Jetties. Those not making the Mykonos Harbour should try to make their own transport arrangements which will make their stay or time there much more comfortable. Mykonos will be providing a Vito type mini bus between Saldanha Bay Yacht Club and Club Mykonos for Saturday and Sunday. There will also be a ferry service available to those anchored off Club Mykonos.
The TV Broadcast times for sailing are as follows:
Team Shosholoza News:
SASWC Youth Training Clinic
The latest SAS Newsletters National and Provincial.
New Sailing Foundation Rotary Regatta: in an effort to revive IFOYR (International Federation of Yachting Rotarians) a regatta was arranged between 4 of the local Rotary Clubs, unfortunately the regatta was blown out, but it has been rescheduled for Sunday 19th April. Lady's Helm Race: When the Lion Of Africa Lady's Day was postponed to the next Sailing Season we decided to have a Lady's Helm Race instead, 17 yachts took part in good conditions, Sandy McLaughlin on Lobelia won overall, Jacqui Brand on Impact Class 2 and Liz Matthews on Cabaray the Non Spinnaker Class. As part of an initiative to ensure the security of all vessels on RCYC marinas, the Outside House Committee proposed to re-introduce the card-reader system on all main marinas accessible from the RCYC parking area (J/K, Q/R and N/P marinas). However, of the 82 mooring rights owners contacted in this regards, the Outside House has only received a response from 18 of the stakeholders. As the implementation of security gates on these marinas limits the access rights of all but vessel owners, the Club naturally requires support for these measures from the majority of those these measures will effect. Mooring Rights Owners who have not responded are asked to reply to gm@rcyc.co.za providing an indication of your support to the proposed plan. 10 December 2009 Dear Mooring Owners The RCYC has initiated a review of its current security regulations and physical measures. Such measures are implemented to ensure safety of Club members and in particular, the security of assets belonging to both the Club and its members. As part of this review, various shortcomings in terms of physical security have been identified and require consideration. One aspect which requires your consideration is the lack of physical security of J/K, N/P and Q/R marinas. In fact, a large percentage of the overall theft from vessels occur on these marinas, a fact directly attributed to the lack of restricting the free access of unwelcome persons upon these marinas. As such, a suggestion has been tabled to re-introduce the card reader (Proxy) system on both the affected marinas. The intent of this system is to protect the vessels berthed on these marinas and to restrict the movement of unauthorized persons on these marinas. However, the system inherently introduces somewhat restrictive access for those which have legitimate business upon the two marinas (skippers, owners, guests and contractors). The real fact is that although ensuring the security of your asset, the system may be viewed as too prohibitive and onerous, which may lead to it being abused by those not in favour of its implementation, bmo tampering with the lock, blocking the gates ability to close, breaking the system. You are therefore asked to consider the implementation of the system, weighing the advantage of security against the restrictive nature that such a system will introduce. If the majority of mooring owners are in support of the proposal, the Club will ensure its implementation. Should you have an alternative suggestion which is practical and achieves better security for your vessel, please forward through to me. Regards |

RCYC is planning | Friday 27th March 2009 RCYC has invited all our fellow yacht clubs in the Western Cape to join us for a fun evening with the Royal Cape Rockers. Snacks will be served and we are going to chat to the other clubs about having an inter-club keelboat racing day at RCYC in April. Please come along and support this initiative and have a great evening with our fellow sailors! |
Car stickers no longer available. As discussed and approved by the Commodore they will no longer be necessary to enter the harbour as they are replaced by the new port entry card. | All members must please remember to collect your NPA Access cards at the Portnet Building in the Waterfront between 08h00 and 16h00 Monday to Friday. There is plenty of parking, the process is painless and takes only ten minutes or so of your time. The option to obtain them at the Oswald Pirow harbour entrance is not possible as was previously communicated. |
Our new menus and wine lists are with the printers and should be available in the first week of March. There has been a marginal, across-the-board price increase on food and beverage items in line with Trevor Manuel's SA Budget increases. We thank you for your understanding in this regard. | If any members see anything wrong with our facilities or notice anything that needs fixing or painting, please tell us! Either email your suggestion or request to info@rcyc.co.za or drop a note in the suggestion box at reception. Help be the club's eyes! |
Members who apply for replacement cards will only receive them when they supply their ID photo on collection. | RCYC'S Laundry is fully functional. Laundry tokens are available from reception at discounted rates for members. |
4-Wheel Heavy-duty Trailer missing from the Elliot Basin. Please contact David Dickinson, Marina Manager, on 021 421 1354 or 082 8998 231 |
OCTOBER RACE Thank you for the hospitality that you extended to me on my visit to Cape Town. I have spoken to fellow members of the Sarasota Yacht Club. We would like to explore the possibility of having our SYC team race in your October women's race. Would it be possible? Best regards
Dear Yacht Club President, By the end of May, I should be in Durban in the ultimate part of my all around the world sailing circumnavigation on my 43 foot aluminium Sailing Yacht Dolce Vita. My final destination is Brazil that I must reach before August 2009. In order to succeed in the late passage from Durban to Cape Town in June, I would really appreciate if a member of the club or an experienced sailor would be interested in joining Dolce Vita crew and help me to complete this tricky passage. Could you support my project and widespread my message among members and the sailing community? Your recommendations will be welcome anyway and feel free to give me any advice that you will judge of interest. Best regards,
