SAILING NEWS

SY Voortrekker returned to Cape Town from Bahia, Salvador crewed by young men from Guguletu. Still with salt embedded in their faces they spoke at a function with their Mentor, Admiral Koos Louw who passionately told of their unprecedented achievement. His words often choked with emotion! This team sailed the 40 year old yacht Voortrekker of Bertie Reid / John Martin fame, an old boat with basic nav equipment, against Rambler, a state of the art monohull with about 27 paid crew. The Isivunguvungu team from Guguletu gave them a good run for their money and showed excellent yachtsmanship, ending up with a fourth placing in the race.   Trained by Isivunguvungu in Simonstown under the ever watchful eye of Admiral Koos Louw, the crew were sponsored by some local concerns at a 10th of a fraction of the funds that supported Rambler.

During the celebrations at SA Navy day in Simonstown an image printed on canvas was presented to each of the crew by Commodore John Martin of RCYC.
The Rotary Club of Cape Town donated an image to the SA Navy Museum in recognition of this major achievement of these young men from our townships.
This is history in the making.
