The Mother City was at her prettiest and most beguiling on Saturday 3rd October, when the 15 yachts taking part in the 7th Annual Lion Of Africa Ladies Race sailed out into Table Bay. Skippered and crewed by female only teams, the stage was set for perfect racing conditions for both the Spinnaker and non Spinnaker classes. This event is the only one of its kind in South Africa, and has had the generous support of Lion Of Africa Insurance Company from its inception in 2002. It has grown hugely in popularity over the years and has encouraged women from all walks of life to participate in the sport of sailing. From complete novices to international racing skippers, this is one of the highlights on the Royal Cape Yacht Club calendar. Fred Robertson, Chairman of Lion Of Africa Insurance, was keen to promote International Breast Cancer Awareness month, and invited Diane Parker, Founder and Director of Journey of Hope, and a survivor of breast cancer herself, to become involved in the regatta. Consequently, the 130 ladies taking part were radiant in their pink Journey of Hope bandannas, both on and off the water. Diane arrived at the Club on Saturday morning astride her gleaming Harley Davidson motorcycle, which caused more than a few sighs of envy from the men! With a fleet of spectator boats cheering them on, the racing got underway at 14h00 in a 10 knot westerly breeze and a calm, flat sea. It was close sailing all the way to the turning mark, where the leaders edged away with their spinnakers flying for the run down to the Milnerton buoy. The very fast 43 footer, Windpower, skippered by Viv Gutsche, led the fleet around Table Bay with international racing skipper, Judy Provoyeur, and her girls on Addis in Cape in hot pursuit. In the non spinnaker class it was also close competition as Dawn Hawtrey on Aurora held off skipper, Mary Waller, on the L34 Tally Ho. Further down the fleet, Jackie Brand was sailing a near perfect tactical race on her yacht, Impact, with her crew demonstrating faultless sail handling. The L26, JML 1, skippered by Daphne Jacobs and her development team from Izivunguvungu were showing great pace and would finish in third place on handicap. The prize giving was a very festive affair, and Lion Of Africa Insurance reaffirmed their commitment to the regatta in 2010. The winning teams were awarded beautiful sandstone trophies and a host of lovely prizes and goodie bags, generously sponsored by a number of local companies..... |
